Saint Paul Audubon Society

Education

Audubon's mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

An important part of that mission is EDUCATION. The underlying assumption is that people will only protect what they understand and they will only understand what they care about. Studies show that caring about nature begins at an early age for most of us. That is why St. Paul Audubon Society’s Education Committee cares about education for children and youth as well as our members.

Our experience tells us that the key to making a difference with children and youth is taking them OUTSIDE on informal guided walks. If you agree, join us!

Current Education Projects

Classroom Volunteering:

St. Paul Audubon Education Committee has Three Minnesota Ornithologist Union Youth Mentorship Kits we use to teach students about habitat and bird identification and to take classes, scout troops, and others on bird walks in their own neighborhoods using good quality binoculars.

Interested Society members may work with current volunteers until feeling confident enough to use the kits on their own. Being an expert birder is NOT required; only a passion for sharing your love of birds and nature with others is necessary.

St. Paul Community Education Class

Mornings, the week of July 10 - 14, 2006, the St. Paul Audubon Chapter is sponsoring a Birding Class for 2nd - 6th graders at Como Park in St. Paul through St. Paul Community Education.. This class is small – only 8 – 10 students. Every day we take a morning bird walk in the park. The other activities include individual reports on a favorite MN species, building birdhouses, and various classes on identification, feathers, migration, and bills and beaks. This is a great team effort. The children who attend love learning about birds and their habitat.

St. Paul Audubon Society Member Education
Members learn from each other. We also learn from our excellent monthly programs, guided field trips, conservation advocacy events and e-Notes.
